Hydration vs Moisturisation: What’s the Real Difference for Your Skin?

Hydration vs Moisturisation: What’s the Real Difference for Your Skin?

As a facialist with over 35 years in the treatment room, one of the most common skincare misconceptions I come across is the confusion between hydration and moisturisation. While they sound similar and are often used interchangeably, they actually address two very different needs in the skin — and understanding the difference can be the key to restoring your glow.

Hydration = Water
Hydration is all about increasing your skin’s water content. Think of it like giving your skin a big drink. When skin is dehydrated, it can feel tight, look dull, and show fine lines more prominently. Even oily or acne-prone skin can be dehydrated — it’s not about oil, but about water. Hydrating ingredients, such as hyaluronic acid, glycerin, or aloe vera, attract water into the skin to plump and refresh. The Face Off Cleanser and Saving Face are both brilliant for this.

Moisturisation = Oil
Moisturisation, on the other hand, is about locking in that hydration and protecting the skin’s barrier with oils or emollients. When your skin lacks moisture, it can feel dry, rough, or flaky. Moisturisers help to seal in water, prevent transepidermal water loss (TEWL), and maintain the skin’s softness and elasticity. The Face Food Serum, All About Face Balm and Saving Face are all good here.

Why You Need Both
Healthy, radiant skin relies on both hydration and moisturisation. Imagine watering a plant — hydration is like giving it water, but moisturisation is like mulching the soil to keep that water in. If you only hydrate without sealing it in, the water evaporates. If you only moisturise dry skin without hydrating it first, you’re sealing in dryness.

The Bottom Line
A well-rounded skincare routine will include both hydrating and moisturising elements. Look for products rich in humectants followed by creams or oils that contain nourishing botanical emollients to seal it all in. Your skin will thank you — with resilience, radiance, and that healthy glow we’re all chasing.
